The Siege of Shrewsbury Castle took place in 1138.
At the start of the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda the castle was held by William Fitz Alan, lord of Oswestry and Clun, on behalf of Matilda.[1] After a short siege King Stephen took the castle and had the surviving garrison hung from the battlements.[2]
The siege provides the backdrop for the book One Corpse Too Many, the second book in the Cadfael Chronicles by Ellis Peters.[3]
