Xiana Méndez Explained

Xiana Méndez Bértolo (born 27 July 1977 in Pontevedra, Spain) is a Spanish state economist and politician. From 2018 and 2024, she served as Secretary of State for Trade, during the presidency of Pedro Sánchez.

Life

She graduated from the Comillas Pontifical University.[1] In 2004, she entered the State Commercial Technicians and Economists through a competitive examination and began her professional career at the National Competition Commission (CNC).

From 2013 to 2015. she held various positions in the General Directorate of Economic Policy of the Ministry of Economy, specializing in the transport, infrastructure and official credit sectors. From 2015 to 2018, she was economic and commercial advisor at the Spanish Embassy in Quito, Ecuador.[2]

In June 2018, she was appointed Secretary of State for Trade and President of the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX). [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] In 2024 she was nominated by Spain as Spanish Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund.[8]
