Wintersingen is a municipality in the district of Sissach in the canton of Basel-Country in Switzerland.

Geography

Wintersingen has an area,, of 6.95km2. Of this area, 4km2 or 57.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.4km2 or 34.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.48km2 or 6.9% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.01km2 or 0.1% is either rivers or lakes and 0.03km2 or 0.4% is unproductive land.[1]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.6% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.6%. Out of the forested land, 31.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.9% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 15.7% is used for growing crops and 32.7% is pastures, while 9.2% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.[1]

Demographics

Wintersingen has a population of ., 5.7% of the population are resident foreign nationals.[3] Over the last 10 years (1997–2007) the population has changed at a rate of 0.8%.[4]

Most of the population speaks German (564 or 95.9%), with Albanian being second most common (10 or 1.7%) and French being third (5 or 0.9%).

Politics

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SVP which received 39.08% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (19.08%), the Green Party (18.55%) and the SP (14.51%). In the federal election, a total of 252 votes were cast, and the voter turnout was 52.9%.[11]

Economy

Of the 81 who completed tertiary schooling, 67.9% were Swiss men, 25.9% were Swiss women.[6]
