Anstey was recorded in the Domesday Book as Anestinge.[6] The name "Anstey" probably means 'steep narrow footpath'.[7] Alternative names for West Anstey are "Anstey West" and "Anstey".[8] The parish was historically in the South Molton hundred.[9]
