He studied art history, archaeology, history and philosophy at the universities of Freiburg, Berlin, Munich and Leipzig, receiving his promotion from the latter institution in 1896 (doctoral advisor, August Schmarsow). Following a study trip through Europe, he served as a volunteer at the Museum of Berlin under the directorship of Wilhelm von Bode. From 1903 onward, he worked as a lecturer at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin, where from 1921 to 1933 he taught classes as an associate professor of art history.
