Vrh Svetih Treh Kraljev (in Slovenian pronounced as /ˈʋəɾx ˈsʋeːtix ˈtɾeːx ˈkɾaːljɛu̯/, in older sources simply Vrh,[2] German: Werch[2]) is a dispersed settlement in the hills north of Rovte in the Municipality of Logatec in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia.[3]

Name

The name of the settlement was changed from Vrh Svetih Treh Kraljev (literally, 'Three Kings’ Peak') to Vrh nad Rovtami (literally, 'Peak above Rovte') in 1952. The name was changed on the basis of the 1948 Law on Names of Settlements and Designations of Squares, Streets, and Buildings as part of efforts by Slovenia's postwar communist government to remove religious elements from toponyms.[4] [5] The name Vrh Svetih Treh Kraljev was restored in 1992.[6] [7]

Church

On top of a hill to the south of the settlement is the landmark parish church from which the settlement gets its name. It is dedicated to the Three Kings (Slovenian: Sveti Trije Kralji) and belongs to the Ljubljana Archdiocese.[8] The church was built in 1698. It formerly contained a 15th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, which is now kept at the National Gallery of Slovenia. Its marble altar is believed to have been brought here from the monastic complex in Bistra.[9] [10]
