Villaflores College THE BACKWOODS UNIVERSITY (VC) is a private, non-sectarian school in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental. It was founded in 1952 and was known as the Tanjay Institute (TI). The institute was eventually renamed in memory of its founder, Dr. Diosdado Villaflores.[1] [2] [3]

History

The school was also called The School on the Hill or the school beside the cemetery. It is situated near the town hall Población IX Barangay Hall and the government office DepEd SDO Tanjay City.[4]

Villaflores College was founded by Diosdado P. Villaflores and Emerenciana F. Villaflores in 1952 in 1.5 hectares of land in Pancil, Tanjay City, Negros Oriental. The school opened in July 1952 with the name Tanjay Institute (TI) offering a Four-year Fishery Curriculum.[5]

The Fishery Curriculum enjoyed government recognition for ten years until it was replaced in July 1, 1963 with the complete Secondary Academic Curriculum under the 2-2 plan. Since then the curriculum was modified several times as prescribed by the Departmant of Education (DepEd). In June 1956, Tanjay Institute grew into Tanjay Junior College with a Collegiate offering of One-year Secretarial Science Course, 2 years Liberal Arts, Commerce and Education courses. Later on, the curriculum offerings covered Four-year Collegiate Courses and gained recognition as a college granting the Bachelor’s Degrees. The College was then entitled to adopt the name College and the school was renamed Tanjay College.

The Elementary department was likewise recognized on the same year. In 1986 the College of Agriculture was opened, and computer education was integrated into commercial curriculum. In 1973, the Grade School of Education was opened. On August 26, 1974, the opening of the Graduate School was inaugurated with Josefa Edralin Marcos, mother of President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. as guest of honor and speaker.

Government recognition for the Masteral Programs was granted on March 1977. In 1976, upon the suggestion of the founder’s son, Tanjay College was renamed Villaflores College
