Tutor Key is an unincorporated community in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States [1] about 4.5 miles northeast of Paintsville. Tutor Key was originally known as Mingo.
On July 3, 1897, the first post office opened in what is now Tutor Key. It was given the name Mingo by local Reverend E. J. Harris, who was from Mingo County, West Virginia. Beginning in the late 1930s, Mingo began having problems with mail being accidentally sent to Wingo, which is a city in Graves County, Kentucky. Supposedly, local resident Lon Daniels suggested the name "Tutor Key" after a brand of shoe polish that he had seen in a local store.[2]
