Trondheimsk Explained
Trondheimsk (pronounced as /no-NO-03/), Trondheim dialect or Trondheim Norwegian is a dialect of Norwegian used in Trondheim. It is a variety of Trøndersk.
Phonology
Consonants
- pronounced as //l// is dental pronounced as /link/.
- After short vowels, it is realized as an approximant, either palatal pronounced as /link/ or palatalized dental pronounced as /[l̪ʲ]/.
- When it occurs after a short vowel before a voiceless stop (particularly pronounced as //t//), it is realized as a voiceless dental lateral continuant, described variously as an approximant pronounced as /link/ and a fricative pronounced as /link/.
- pronounced as //r// tends to be realized as a voiced retroflex fricative pronounced as /link/. It is devoiced to pronounced as /link/ before pronounced as //p// and pronounced as //k//.
Vowels
- pronounced as //iː// and pronounced as //yː// can be diphthongized to, respectively, pronounced as /[ie]/ and pronounced as /[ye]/.
- pronounced as //uː// is diphthongized to pronounced as /[ue]/.
- pronounced as //eː, øː// and pronounced as //ɔː// are diphthongized to, respectively, pronounced as /[eæ]/, pronounced as /[øæ]/ and pronounced as /[ɔ̝æ]/.
- The schwa pronounced as /link/ does not exist in the Trondheim dialect.
- pronounced as //æ, æː// have the most open realization in all of Norway, i.e. open front pronounced as /[{{IPAplink|a}}, {{IPAplink|aː}}]/.
- pronounced as //ɑ, ɑː// are fully back pronounced as /[{{IPAplink|ɑ}}, {{IPAplink|ɑː}}]/.
- pronounced as //ɑi// has a back starting point pronounced as /[ɑi]/.
Tonemes
Phonetic realization
The tonemes of the Trondheim dialect are the same as those of the Oslo dialect; accent 1 is low-rising, whereas accent 2 is falling-rising.
