Thomond Bridge Explained

Thomond Bridge is the name of a former and current bridge over the river Shannon in Limerick city.

Historic bridge

The earliest bridge, was built near a fording point.[1] It was the scene of a failed defence of the city during the Siege of Limerick. The old Thomond bridge was located at the same location as the current bridge,[2] near King John's Castle.[3] The Treaty Stone was placed near there.

Current bridge

The current bridge was built from 1836 to 1836,[4] replacing the earlier bridge.[5] The bridge now forms part of the R445 (formerly N7), carrying traffic on the Northern Relief Road.[6]
