Thomas Lockley (born 1978) is an English educator residing in Japan.[1] He is an associate professor of the College of Law of Nihon University,[2] as well as a visiting researcher for the SOAS University of London. He is also a writer who penned works such as African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan.
Lockley was born in the United Kingdom in 1978.
Lockley first came to Japan in 2000 as a participant of the JET Programme and stayed at Tottori City for 2 years, where he worked as an Assistant Language Teacher at an elementary school.[3] He then became a full-time lecturer at the Nihon University College of Law, before becoming an associate professor at the college in 2019.[4] That same year, he also became a visiting researcher for SOAS.
Lockley's field of study is languages, particularly in Content and Language Integrated Learning. Lockley also does research in Japanese and Asian history. Lockley teaches history and English at school, with him teaching Japanese history from an International perspective.
In 2016, he released a thesis paper titled The Story of Yasuke: Nobunaga's African Retainer on the Nihon University's journal,[5] and in 2017 he published his first work titled . In 2019, he wrote African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan in the United States together with Geoffrey Girard.
