The Vagrants is the first novel by Yiyun Li. It was published in 2009, following her award-winning 2005 short story collection A Thousand Years of Good Prayers.

The novel won Li the 2009 gold medal of California Book Award for fiction.

In his review, in The New York Times, Pico Iyer characterizes her novel as an instance of "American stories that are World stories".

Reception

The Vagrants was generally well received upon release. Culture Critic assessed critical response as an aggregated score of 76% based on British and American press reviews.[1] In Bookmarks May/June 2009 issue, a magazine that aggregates critic reviews of books, the book received a (4.00 out of 5) with the summary stating, "Reviewers were clearly impressed by The Vagrants, especially noteworthy because it is Li’s first novel".[2]
