The Red Virgin[1] (Spanish; Castilian: '''La virgen roja'''|links=no;[2] also known under the working title of Hildegart) is an upcoming drama film directed by Paula Ortiz from a screenplay by Eduard Solà and Clara Roquet starring Najwa Nimri and Alba Planas as respectively Aurora and Hildegart Rodríguez.

Plot

Conceived and nurtured by her mother Aurora in a pet project to deliver the woman of the future, 18-year-old Hildegart, already a brilliant mind and acknowledged European pundit on female sexuality, attempts to set herself free from Aurora's grip as she gets acquainted with Abel Vilella, pitting mother and daughter against each other on a fateful night in 1933.[3]

Production

The screenplay was written by Eduard Solà and Clara Roquet.[4] An Amazon MGM Studios, Elastica, and Avalon production,[5] the project was disclosed by Amazon Prime Video at the 'Prime Video Presents España' event in April 2023.[6] The platform pitched the film as a mix of "historical drama, romance, thriller and a touch of true crime".[7] Main cast additions including Najwa Nimri, Alba Planas, Patrick Criado, Aixa Villagrán and Pepe Viyuela were announced on 14 June 2023.[8] Shooting had already begun by July 2023.[9] Production wrapped on 19 August 2023.[10] Shooting locations in Madrid included the Congress, Puerta del Sol, and Ateneo de Madrid.

Release

The Red Virgin will receive a special screening at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival.[11] The film is set to be released theatrically in Spain on 27 September 2024 by Elastica.[12] [13]
