The Platform 2 (Spanish; Castilian: El hoyo 2) is an upcoming Spanish satirical science fiction film, directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia and scheduled to be released in October 2024.[1] The film is a follow-up to 2019's The Platform about a large tower-style prison and stars Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Natalia Tena, and Óscar Jaenada.[1]
The film returns to the world of "The Platform," a large, tower-style "Vertical Self-Management Center" prison that houses various criminals. The dozens of floors house two occupants per floor and a free-floating platform delivers food to them on a daily schedule.
The original film was released on Netflix in March 2020. Subsequently, the film received a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and the company revealed the film had been watched by 56 million households over its first four weeks of release, among the most-ever for one of their original films.[2]
Discussions of a sequel emerged shortly after the film's success in 2020. In May 2023, Netflix reported the beginning of filming of the follow-up with Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia returning as director and starring Hovik Keuchkerian and Milena Smit.[3]
Shooting locations included the BEC in Barakaldo.[4]
In July 2024, Netflix released the first trailer for the film and announced an October 4, 2024 release date.[1]
