The Journal of Japanese Studies (JJS) is a double-blind peer-reviewed academic journal covering research on Japan. Established in 1974, the journal’s core mission is to publish original, evidence-based scholarship spanning the humanities and social sciences. JJS also features book reviews and “Perspective” essays offering evaluations of specific critical topics and recent scholarship.

JJS appears twice a year (in print and online) with summer and winter issues. It is coedited by Sabine Frühstück and Morgan Pitelka. The book review editor is Jessamyn R. Abel.

University of California Press publishes JJS on behalf of the Society for Japanese Studies. It’s also available online in the Project MUSE and JSTOR databases.
