Walt gets a job at the AlleyCatz bowling alley. He is forced to accept his talent as a bowler, prompting backlash from his detractors who seek to undermine his professional success.
The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 12, 2024. In August 2024, Magnolia Pictures acquired North American distribution rights to the film, scheduling it for a simultaneous release in theaters and video on demand on November 1, 2024.[1]
The film has an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on seven reviews.[2] Matt Donato of Collider rated the film a 7 out of 10.[3] Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review and wrote, "...The Gutter — like an early Paul Beatty novel — seems destined to be a cult classic."[4] Stephen Saito of Variety also gave the film a positive review and wrote, "Laughter strikes from all sides in The Gutter, the kind of brash and boisterous broad comedy that has largely been missing from multiplexes in recent years."[5] Fletcher Peters of The Daily Beast gave the film a negative review and wrote, "But all in all, do these bonkers, fantastical edits to the game of bowling make The Gutter a fun, farcical ride? Well, also no."[6]
