V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University (TNU) (Ukrainian: Таврійський національний університет імені В.І. Вернадського (ТНУ)) is a public university currently located in Kyiv. The university was founded in Simferopol in 1918 with the active participation of the geologist Vladimir Vernadsky. The university now bears his name. The university has 16 departments and 20 academic institutes. The university has the status of national and is accredited to the fourth level by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine.

History

Founding

One of the masterminds behind the establishment of the Taurida University was Solomon Krym, who proposed the idea in his report on the urgent need for a higher education institution in the Taurida Governorate in 1916. However, the university was not established during the Russian Empire, but by a special decree of the Crimean Regional Government "On the establishment of the Taurida University" in 1918.

Soviet period

In the 1920s Crimea fell under complete control of the Soviets, and the new government restructured the institution into the M.V. Frunse Crimea University, eliminated some departments, and reduced funding.

Modern period

After the 2014 Russian occupation, the occupation authorities restructured the V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University into a so-called V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University and dissolved the department of Ukrainian Philology and Ukrainian Studies. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dismissed the Rector Mykola Bahrov due to his collaboration with the occupation authorities.

On December 31, 2015 the Ministry issued a decree “On organizing the educational process in V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University”. On September 26, 2016 the V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University was formally opened, having been relocated to Kyiv from annexed Crimea. The opening ceremony took place in the assembly hall of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
