^[1] was a noted Japanese lichenologist and 1994 recipient of the Acharius Medal.^[2] He studied under Mason Hale^[3] and Yasuhiko Asahina.^[1] Between 1966 and 1987 he edited the exsiccata Lichenes rariores et critici exsiccati, starting with 1978 together with H. Kashiwadani.^[4]
