Světlá nad Sázavou (in Czech pronounced as /ˈsvjɛtlaː ˈnat saːzavou/; German: Swietla ob der Sasau) is a town in Havlíčkův Brod District in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 6,500 inhabitants. It is known for a large women's prison.
The villages and hamlets of Benetice, Dolní Březinka, Dolní Dlužiny, Horní Březinka, Horní Dlužiny, Josefodol, Kochánov, Leštinka, Lipnička, Mrzkovice, Opatovice, Radostovice, Závidkovice and Žebrákov are administrative parts of Světlá nad Sázavou.
Světlá nad Sázavou is located about 14km (09miles) northwest of Havlíčkův Brod and 32km (20miles) northwest of Jihlava. It lies in the Upper Sázava Hills. The highest point is the hill Žebrákovský kopec at 601m (1,972feet) above sea level. The Sázava River flows through the town. There are several fishponds in the municipal territory.
The first written mention of Světlá is from 1207. It was founded during the colonization in the second half of the 12th century. Světlá experienced the greatest development during the rule of the Trčka of Lípa family, which acquired it after the Hussite Wars and owned it until 1607. In the 17th century, the glassmaking tradition was founded in Světlá.[2]
The glassmaking tradition continues to this day. Crystal Bohemia, the largest Czech glass company, has owned a local production plant since 2020.[3]
The Světlá nad Sázavou Prison is the main employer in Světlá nad Sázavou. It is a large prison for women with all levels of security. It employs more than 300 people.[4] In 2022, its capacity was expanded to 955 convicts.[5]
Světlá nad Sázavou is located on the railway lines Prague–Brno and Havlíčkův Brod–Ledeč nad Sázavou.[6] The train station dates from the 1870s and is protected as a cultural monument.[7]
The main sight of the town is the Světlá nad Sázavou Castle. It was probably originally a fortress, rebuilt into a castle by Burian Trčka of Lípa in 1567.[2] Today the castle is open to the public and houses several expositions, and a part of the castle is used as a hotel. Next to the castle is an English park with an area of, founded in 1871.[8]
A significant building is the Church of Saint Wenceslaus. It was originally a Gothic church, rebuilt in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. It has an atypical tower.[9] The second landmark of the town square is the town hall, built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.[2]
