The Sun Way 21 is a French sailboat that was designed by J&J Design as a cruiser and first built in 1989.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]
The design was built by Jeanneau in France, from 1989 to 1995, with 532 boats completed, but it is now out of production.[1] [2] [3] [4] [8] [10] [11] [12]
The Sun Way 21 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of polyester fiberglass, with wood trim. The hull is solid fiberglass, while the deck has a balsa core. There is also injected foam that makes the boat unsinkable. It has a 7/8 fractional sloop rig, with a deck-stepped pivoting mast, one set of swept spreaders and aluminum spars with continuous stainless steel wire rigging. The hull has a raked stem, a walk-through reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel or optional stub keel and steel centerboard, with a folding rudder. The fin keel model displaces 18740NaN0 and carries 5070NaN0 of cast iron ballast, while the centerboard version displaces 18520NaN0 and carries 4410NaN0 of cast iron external ballast.[1] [2] [3] [4] [9]
The keel-equipped version of the boat has a draft of 2.46feet, while the centerboard-equipped version has a draft of 4.27feet with the centerboard extended and 2.13feet with it retracted, allowing operation in shallow water or ground transportation on a trailer.[1] [2]
The boat is normally fitted with a small 4or outboard motor for docking and maneuvering.[3] [4]
The design has sleeping accommodation for four people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin and two straight settees in the main cabin around a rectangular table. Cabin headroom is 580NaN0.[1] [2] [3] [4]
For sailing downwind the design may be equipped with a symmetrical spinnaker of 269square feet.[3] [4]
The design has a hull speed of 5.67kn.[2] [3] [4]
