Early life

Young was born in Calgary, Alberta and after moving to the Edmonton area grew up on an acreage south east of Sherwood Park in Strathcona County.

Young attended the University of Alberta and played for the Alberta Golden Bears Hockey Team.[4] While there, he earned a bachelor's degree in education (B.Ed.), won three Canada West League Championships (1990–91, 1991–92, 1992–93),[5] and a CIS National Title (1991–92).[6]
