Square Top Mountain is a 13794feet mountain summit in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States.

Description

Square Top Mountain is set approximately 1miles east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range which is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains.[2] The mountain is located 42miles west-southwest of Denver and 3miles west of Guanella Pass on land managed by Arapaho National Forest and Pike National Forest. It ranks as the 111th-highest peak in Colorado.[3] Precipitation runoff from the mountain's north slope drains into South Clear Creek and the south slope drains to Geneva Creek. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises 3700feet above Geneva Creek in two miles (3.2 km) and 2600feet above Smelter Gulch in one mile (1.6 km). An ascent of the peak involves hiking 7miles with 2400feet of elevation gain from Guanella Pass via the Square Top Lakes Trail.[1] [5] The mountain's descriptive toponym was officially adopted on June 7, 1933, by the United States Board on Geographic Names.[4] Prior to that it was also called Lewis Mountain or Mt. Lewis.[4]

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification system, Square Top is located in an alpine subarctic climate zone with cold, snowy winters, and cool to warm summers.[6] Due to its altitude, it receives precipitation all year, as snow in winter, and as thunderstorms in summer, with a dry period in late spring.
