Spur Corporation Limited (JSE: SUR) is a South African restaurant company. It operates a number of franchise chains, among them Casa Bella, Panarotti's‚ RocoMamas and Spur Steak Ranches.

The company was founded by Allen Ambor (who is still the company's executive chairman) in 1967,[4] when he opened the Golden Spur in Newlands, Cape Town.[5]

Brands

Spur Steak Ranches accounts for approximately 50% of the revenue of the company. It sells food to takeaway and delivery services in some locations.[6]

The Panarotti's pizza and pasta restaurant chain was started in 1990 and has 84 outlets.[7]

In 2004 the group bought a 60% shareholding in John Dory’s Fish and Grill, a KwaZulu-Natal-based franchise with 54 outlets.

Controversies

In March 2017, a racially charged incident occurred between two customers in a South African Spur Steak Ranch restaurant when a black African family got into an expletive-filled argument with a white Afrikaner family, after a black child reportedly hit a white child. The restaurant banned the white family from the premises, but did not ban the black family.[8] White Afrikaners eventually criticized and ultimately boycotted the restaurant for siding with the black family, as well as for not doing more to break up the fight. The restaurant chain also received criticism for its slow official response, which was judged inadequate.[9]
