Competition climbing is a nascent sport in India. It is governed by the recently formed Federation of Indian Sport Climbing, and was initially administered by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation.[1] In 2024, Rajmohan Pillai and Sushil Malik were elected the president and vice-president of the SCFI.[2] [3]

Bangalore is a hub of competition climbing in India.[4] The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering conducts short term courses in competition climbing.[5]

Indian competition climbers

Deepu Mallesh at rank 81 is the highest-ranked Indian competition climber and the holder of the record in competition speed climbing.[6] Prateeksha Arun, the winner of national titles, took part in the 2023 Asian Games.[7] Shivani Charak has represented the country at the Asian Youth Games and the Asian Games.[8]

India sent a seven-member sport climbing contingent to the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.[9] However, the athletes did not win any podium places.[10] [11]
