Sphumelele Shamase (also Siphumelele; born 16 January 2002) is a South African soccer player who plays as a midfielder for A Lyga side FC Gintra and the South Africa women's national team.[1]
She has an identical twin sister, Thubelihle Shamase, who also plays soccer.[2]
Shamase currently plays for the UJ Ladies F.C.
In 2023, she was the top scorer in the 2023 Hollywoodbets Super League finishing with 22 goals.[3]
On 6 May 2024 she joined A Lyga side FC Gintra.[4] She made her debut in a 3-1 win over Rīgas FS on 8 May 2024.
In 2017, she was selected in the Bantwana squad for the FIFA U/17 Women's World Cup Qualifiers.[5] Shamase competed for Bantwana at the 2018 FIFA U/17 Women's World Cup.[6]
In 2022, she competed for the South African women's national team at the 2022 COSAFA Women's Championship were they finished as runners-up to Zambia. Shamase scored 2 goals in the tournament.[7]
In 2023, she was part of the team that were selected for the 2023 COSAFA Women's Championship where they existed in the group stages and was also added to the senior national team for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of nations qualifier against Burkina Faso.[8] [9]
