As a census subdivision in the 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Smoky Lake County had a population of 4,107 living in 1,556 of its 2,248 total private dwellings, a change from its 2011 population of 3,910.[5] This includes the population of two Métis settlements, Buffalo Lake (712) and Kikino (934),[6] located within the census subdivision that are municipalities independent of Smoky Lake County.
