Show Your Love is the third studio album by Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai, released on December 22, 2000, by Universal and D Sound.[1] The album was produced by David Wu, Peter Lee, Paul Lee, Chen Wei, and Jae Chong.[2] It features diverse musical styles and showcases a more mature vocal performance from Tsai.[3]

The album received positive reviews from music critics, who praised it as Tsai's most musically varied work during her time with Universal, with a balanced mix of fast-paced and slow-tempo tracks.[4] Show Your Love was commercially successful, selling over 260,000 copies in Taiwan. On September 6, 2001, the music video for the track "Fall in Love with a Street" won the 2001 MTV Video Music Award for International Viewer's Choice.[5]

Background and development

On April 26, 2000, Tsai released her second studio album Don't Stop.[6] The album sold over 500,000 copies in Taiwan,[7] ranking sixth in annual album sales for the year 2000, and second in sales for a female artist in Taiwan.[8] On July 11, 2000, Tsai traveled to New York City to attend a one-month vocal training course at the Juilliard School, instructed by vocal coaches Don Lawrence and BeV.[9] [10]

On November 24, 2000, the media reported that Tsai had completed recording her new album. Tsai herself described the experience, stating, "It felt like finishing the last exam of a college entrance test, a complete sense of relief."[11] On December 7, 2000, it was revealed that her new album would be released on December 22 of the same year.[12]

Writing and recording

The lead single, "Show Your Love", is an energetic party anthem. During the recording process, producer Paul Lee encouraged Tsai and the recording engineers to dance in the studio, allowing her to sing while dancing. To enhance the festive atmosphere of the song, eight African-American backup singers from New York City were invited to provide backing vocals. Their natural sense of rhythm added an extra layer of dynamism to the track.

"Do You Still Love Me" is a deeply emotional ballad. The song features a delicate and uplifting melody, with lyrics that express a young woman's nuanced longing for love and her fear of being hurt. During her summer break, Tsai traveled to the United States to study at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City.

"Fall in Love with a Street" was inspired by the streets of New York City. The lyrics convey a young woman's anticipation and yearning for love. "Reluctant" is a beautiful and moving ballad that captures a woman's inner emotional struggles. "Feel Your Presence" reflects Tsai's transition from childhood to womanhood, expressing her evolving outlook on love and the anticipation of its arrival.[13]

Release and promotion

The album's initial edition included 10 tracks along with a video documentary titled Jolin's True Life. Starting on January 13, 2001, Tsai held 28 album autograph sessions across Taiwan.[14] [15] To celebrate the success of these events, which attracted over 300,000 attendees, Universal released a new edition of the album on February 9, 2001. On February 25, Tsai held her first Show Your Love Concert at the Taipei County Stadium in Panchiao, Taiwan.[16] On March 4, Tsai was scheduled to perform her second Show Your Love Concert in Taichung.[17]

On March 16, 2001, Universal released another edition of the album, which included two additional music videos and three live performance clips from the Show Your Love Concert. From March 17 to March 24, Tsai embarked on a promotional tour, visiting Singapore and Hong Kong for three-day promotional events in each city.[18] [19] [20] On August 13, 2001, Universal released the video album Show Your Love Karaoke. The album includes 10 music videos, as well as 5 television commercial clips featuring Tsai for the brand Tsaio.

The album went on to achieve commercial success, ranking number 11 on Taiwan's Rose Record year-end sales chart of 2001.[21]

Live performances

On December 31, 2000, Tsai performed at the New Year's Eve Concert, organized by CTS. During the event, she performed the songs "Show Your Love", "Reluctant", "Fall in Love with a Street", "Baby Face", and "Do You Still Love Me".[22] On March 22, 2001, Tsai participated in the recording of Asia Super Live, a variety show hosted by Japan's Fuji TV, where she performed "Show Your Love". The episode aired on March 27, 2001.[23] On June 9, 2001, Tsai performed at the event held by MTV Mandarin in Taipei, Taiwan, where she performed "Show Your Love" and "Surprise".[24] Following these appearances, Tsai continued to participate in various events across different regions, where she performed songs from the album.

Singles and music videos

On December 12, 2000, the music video for "Show Your Love" was released on several major Taiwanese websites, including Yahoo, PChome, Yam, and Sina. Additionally, the video was featured on City Chain's 70 stores, 100-inch LED-screen truck in northern Taiwan, Mobitai's 10 stores in central Taiwan, and the outdoor screens at Hanshin Department Store in Kaohsiung. Directed by Tony Lin, the "Show Your Love" music video featured 14 dancers to capture the lively party atmosphere. To reflect the song's upbeat rhythm, Tsai also performed aerial dance sequences with wire suspension. On December 13, 2000, Tsai officially released the single "Show Your Love".[25]

The music video for "Do You Still Love Me" was filmed on a remote grassland, creating a vast sense of space. Directed by Kuang Sheng, the video featured actor Ming Dao. The song also ranked number 30 on the Taiwan's Hit FM Top 100 Singles chart of 2001.[26]

The music video for "Fall in Love with a Street" was directed by Ma Yi-chung. It was inspired by Tsai's real-life experiences while studying in New York City, featuring scenes of Tsai laughing and practicing dance with classmates, as well as moments of solitude and homesickness. Tsai shared, "Being alone in a foreign land truly makes you appreciate the warmth of home. During my time in the United States, I really missed everything about Taiwan."[27] Additionally, the music videos for "Reluctant" and "Feel Your Presence" were also directed by Ma Yi-chung.

Critical reception

Deng Ting of Southern Metropolis Daily commented: "The 2000 album Show Your Love clearly established Jolin Tsai's personal style. The songs are filled with the emotions she exudes, allowing listeners to absorb her youthful energy and sentiments from each track. Of course, being young means she may not yet have the depth of life experience, and after listening to the album, one feels that while first love is beautiful, reality holds greater importance. It remains to be seen whether, as she ages, Tsai's performances will grow in depth."[28]

Shu Wa of Tencent Entertainment stated: "It can be said that Show Your Love marks the beginning of Jolin Tsai's bold experimentation. The record company allowed greater freedom with this album, moving away from the cautious approach of producing conventional music. This album is, in a sense, Tsai's first truly diverse work in terms of musical style. Tracks like "Show Your Love" and "Fall in Love with a Street" show her departure from the naivety of her early career. The standout feature of the album is undoubtedly the perfect rhythmic harmonies of eight African American backing vocalists in "Show Your Love", marking Tsai's first collaboration with renowned Korean producer Jae Chong."

Accolades

On May 18, 2001, Tsai received the Top 10 Singers award at the MTV Mandarin Awards.[29] On September 6, 2001, the music video for "Fall in Love with a Street" won the 2001 MTV Video Music Award for International Viewer's Choice.
