Shetty Explained

Shetty (in Kannada ʃeʈːi/) is a surname originating from coastal Karnataka state of India. Found amongst the Bunt community, they were traditionally a part of the Nagavanshi Kshatriyas.[1] The word 'Shetray' is anglicised as Shetty, meaning nobility.[2]

Etymology

The word Shetty is derived from the Sanskrit word (Devanagari: श्रेष्ठ) or (Devanagari: श्रेष्ठीन्) meaning superior, Prakritised as (Devanagari: सेठी), and then (Devanagari: शेट) or (Devanagari: शेटी).[3]
