The institution's overarching objective is to nurture skilled individuals capable of addressing nationwide specialized requirements.

Officially ratified and endorsed by the Academic Degrees Committee of China's State Council (ADCCSC) for the conferral of master's degrees in 2020, Shanghai Dianji University (SDJU) presently offers a diverse range of academic programs. These include five postgraduate programs in the fields of energy power, international business, electronic information, machinery, materials, and the chemical industry.

At the undergraduate level, SDJU provides 39 distinct programs. Additionally, there are 8 junior college programs, among which one holds the prestigious status of being a first-class state-level undergraduate program. Two programs boast distinctive national recognition, while three programs have received authorization as "excellent engineer education" programs from the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, SDJU features ten first-class local undergraduate programs, eleven pioneering application-oriented undergraduate pilot programs, one exemplary all-English teaching program, and three programs that have achieved certification in engineering education.

Furthermore, SDJU houses two state-level education centers dedicated to engineering internship programs. The university proudly ranks among the first cohort of nationwide CDIO pilot universities in China and stands as the inaugural model university in Shanghai to champion educational reforms fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

History

Shanghai Electrical Machinery College, founded in 1953, was organized by the East China Industrial Administration. It was originally named Shanghai Electrical Equipment Industrial School (上海电器工业学校). In 1954, it was renamed Shanghai Electrical Machine Manufacturing School (上海电器制造学校). In 1956, it was renamed Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing School (上海电机制造学校).

In 1970, the school was dissolved.

The school was reopened in 1978 and was named Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing School (上海电机制造学校).

In 1985, Shanghai Municipality submitted it to the National Education Commission of China for approval and established a five-year technical college on a trial basis. At the same time, the school was renamed Shanghai Electrical Machinery Manufacturing Technology Vocational School (上海电机制造技术专科学校).

In 1987, the Shanghai City Mechanical and Electrical First Bureau Workers College Minhang Branch (上海市机电一局职业大学闵行分部) was merged into the school.

In 1992, it was changed to Shanghai Electrical Machinery Higher Vocational School (上海电机技术高等专科学校).

In 1998, Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry Workers College First Branch School (上海机电工业职工大学一分校) and Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry Workers Secondary Vocational School (上海机电工业职工中等专业学校) were merged to the school.

In 2001, Shanghai Electrical Machinery Higher Vocational School (上海电机技术高等专科学校) incorporated Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry Workers College (上海机电工业职工大学) and Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry School (上海市机电工业学校).

In September 2004, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the school was upgraded to an undergraduate institution and renamed Shanghai Electrical Machinery College (上海电机学院), the current name of the institute.
