Seikan Tunnel Tappi Shakō Line Explained

The is a Japanese funicular railway in Sotogahama, Aomori, operated by the Seikan Tunnel Museum.[1]

The narrow-gauge line descends from the Seikan Tunnel Memorial Hall, near Cape Tappi, into an underground station on the Seikan Tunnel, which is one of the longest railway tunnels in the world (which opened in March 1988), second to the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland that opened in June 2016.[2] [3]

The railway was originally installed to facilitate fast evacuation fromvTappi-Kaitei Station, one of the former JR stations in the tunnel.[4]
