Scott Thomas Blewett (born April 10, 1996) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the Minnesota Twins organization. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Kansas City Royals and in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) for the Uni-President Lions.
Blewett attended Charles W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville, New York.[1] He committed to play college baseball at St. John's University.[2] As a senior, he was the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for New York.[3] Blewett was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.[4] [5] He signed for $1.8 million.[6]
After signing, Blewett made his professional debut with the Burlington Royals, going 1–2 with a 4.82 ERA in eight games (seven starts). He played 2015 and 2016 with the Lexington Legends, posting a 3–5 record with a 5.20 ERA over 18 starts in 2015 and an 8–11 record with a 4.31 ERA in 25 starts in 2016, and 2017 with the Wilmington Blue Rocks,[7] where he went 7–10 with a 4.07 ERA in a career high innings pitched, making 27 starts.[8] He spent the 2018 season with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, going 8–6 with a 4.79 ERA in 26 games (25 starts).
The Royals added Blewett to their 40-man roster after the 2018 season.[9] He began 2019 with the Omaha Storm Chasers,[10] and also spent time with the Naturals. Over 23 games (21 starts) between the two teams, Blewett went 6–11 with a 7.34 ERA, striking out ninety over innings.
On August 5, 2020, Blewett was promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He was optioned down the next day without making a major league appearance. He was recalled on August 15, but again sent down without play a day later. On September 16, he was recalled again, and made his major league debut on September 18 against the Milwaukee Brewers, pitching 2 scoreless innings.[11]
On April 1, 2021, Blewett was designated for assignment by the Royals.[12] On April 6, Blewett was outrighted to the alternate training site.[13] Blewett was selected back to the Royals roster during September, and pitched 5 innings, giving up 1 run. On October 29, Blewett elected free agency.[14]
On April 9, 2022, Blewett signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox organization.[15] In 27 games (25 starts) split between the Double–A Birmingham Barons and the Triple–A Charlotte Knights, he accumulated an 8–7 record and 5.78 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 123.0 innings of work. He elected free agency following the season on November 10.[16]
On March 29, 2023, Blewett signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves organization.[17] In 17 games (13 starts) for the Double–A Mississippi Braves, he registered a 3–4 record and 4.21 ERA with 76 strikeouts in innings pitched.[18]
On August 12, 2023, Blewett signed with the Uni-President Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL).[19] In 7 starts for the Lions, he logged a 3–3 record and 3.95 ERA with 40 strikeouts over 41 innings of work. Blewett became a free agent following the season.
On January 24, 2024, Blewett signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins.[20] In 36 outings for the Triple–A St. Paul Saints, he recorded a 3.66 ERA with 52 strikeouts across innings pitched. On August 9, the Twins selected Blewett's contract, adding him to their active roster.[21] He made one appearance for the Twins, tossing a scoreless inning of relief against the Kansas City Royals. Blewett was designated for assignment following the promotion of Zebby Matthews on August 13.[22] He cleared waivers and was sent outright to St. Paul on August 16.[23] However, Blewett rejected the assignment in favor of free agency.[24] He re-signed with the Minnesota on a new minor league contract the following day.[25]
