Sharma Explained

Sharma is a Hindu Brahmin surname. The Sanskrit stem (nom.) can mean 'joyfulness', 'comfort', 'happiness'.[1] Sarma and Sarmah are alternative English spellings of the name, commonly used by Assamese Brahmins.[2]

Origin

According to the Bhavishya Purana, Sharma is the first Brahmin surname, which the Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, is said to have given to King Jaisen.[3]
