Sarab (Persian: سراب) is a city in the Central District of Sarab County, East Azerbaijan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[2] Sarab is famous for its rugs.[3]

At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 42,057 in 11,045 households.[4] The following census in 2011 counted 44,846 people in 13,353 households.[5] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 45,031 people in 13,953 households.[6]

Culture

People of sarab contains 37% citizens, 16% nomad people, mainly from moghan and rest of peoples live in sarab's villages.[7]

Sarabi people are mostly Turkish-origin Azerbaijanis speaking Azeri language, but in its special accent, the pronunciation of words is more like Ardabil dialect in which the verb conjugation is more similar to Tabriz dialect.[8] [9]

Religion

Muslims are the dominant group in the city, but in new generations of people, atheism can be found.[10]

Rugs

The rugs of Sarab, which are also classified among those known as Heriz, have light, rather bright colour schemes. The usual adjective for "of Sarab" would be "Sarab-i", this changed to "Serapi". In 1876, about the time that Sarabi rugs were coming on the market in England, the Prince of Wales made a trip to India on H.M.S. Serapis. The similarity of the names led to the form "Serapi" for the rugs.[11]

Climate

Sarab has a cold semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk). Winters are cold and snowy, while summers are warm to hot with little precipitation. Most of the annual precipitation falls between the months of November and May.

Neighborhood

The city of Sarab is surrounded by many villages.[12] Some of its main villages are: Razliq, Asbforushan, Qaleh Juq, Andarab and 161 others; also there are 13 abandoned villages around it.[13]

East of Sarab leads to Ardabil province. North lies Savalan Mountain. Westward from Sarab leads to the city of Bostanabad, and to the south are the Bozghush mountains.[14] [15]
