Sapio Sciences is a technology company that develops software to support drug research and discovery processes. Founded by Kevin Cramer, Sapio Sciences has developed software products for laboratory operations, particularly in biotechnology and chemistry.[1]
Sapio Sciences was founded in 2004 to develop software tools to address the growing genotyping need for tools to assist in analyzing genetics data, particularly in relation to Genome Wide Association Studies. Sapio's Exemplar Analytics software grew to incorporate over 50 different algorithms. Sapio was subsequently approached by customers to develop a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This led to the development of Exemplar LIMS in June 2007 by Kevin Cramer with several extensions since then.[2] [3] The company targets highly regulated environments such as part 11, GLP and CLIA laboratories.[4] Kevin Cramer has a background in Information Systems from York College, PA. He has co-authored multiple papers in Nature Genetics, applying statistical and machine learning methodologies to genetic data interpretation.[5]
In 2013, Sapio Sciences launched Web Client 1.0. Sapio was then the first to integrate a full-featured, web-based Electronic Lab Notebook with its LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) built together on a single software platform in 2017.[6]
In 2020 the company launched a new Sapio Platform that extended its core platform with additional modules for data analysis and knowledge extraction.[7] The Sapio Platform was iterated on to add templated modules for different life sciences applications, including biotechnology research, next-generation sequencing (NGS), bioanalysis, etc.[8] [9] [10] [11] [12]
In the summer of 2023, NatureMetrics selected Sapio LIMS to enable environmental DNA sequencing.[13] In 2023, Oxford Biomedica selected Sapio ELN for its cell and gene therapy research and development business.[14] In 2023, Immunebridge announced it had selected the Sapio Electronic Lab Notebook to modernize its enterprise data management for its work on NK cell-based immunotherapies.[15] In November 2023, Sapio Sciences became the first company to introduce an AI-Chat Scientific Assistant integrated directly into an Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN), called ELaiN (Electronic Lab Artificially Intelligent Notebook).[16] [17]
Sapio Sciences is focused on expediting drug discovery processes through its unified lab platform that has built-in science applications and data management tools, including web client, data designer, and a workflow engine, among other tools. Kevin Cramer is the founder and CEO.[18]
Exemplar was introduced in 2007 as a LIMS and electronic laboratory notebook product.[19] The software was subsequently expanded to perform additional tasks.[20]
Workflow and data tracking features were introduced in 2008 to allow the software to be used for Scientific Data Management (SDMS).[21] Statistics have also be implemented to perform detailed analysis of scientific data within the same environment.[22]
Sapio extended its software with features for biomarker discovery including features for managing clinical study data, treatment groups data, subject data, sample data and assay data from diverse assays such as Immunohistochemistry, Western Blot, PCR, etc. Basic data mining and statistical analysis tools are included for tasks such as data normalization, logistic regression, ANOVA and genetic algorithms.
Sapio introduced the Exemplar[23] Dx LIMS product for molecular diagnostic companies that is optimised to handle diagnostic test request and results. In addition to sample management and protocol tracking, it emphasises kit and instrument integration with Dx platforms such as Qiagen and Beckman Coulter.[24] Physicians can be presented a web interface for test ordering, or test requests can be imported using the HL7 format. Assay data is then managed in Exemplar and the Dx companies custom algorithms can be implemented to analyze the data and produce the diagnostic report automatically. This report, once electronically signed off, is then delivered via the web, secure fax, HL7 or secure email to the requesting physician.[25]
