Salangai Durai is an Indian film director and producer, who has directed Tamil language films. He became known for the rural drama Kathavarayan (2008), and has gone on to make feature films including Kandharvan (2014) and Kadathal (2023).
After working as a television director and a dialogue writer in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Salangai Durai made his directorial debut with Kathavarayan (2008) starring Karan and Vidisha. The film opened to negative reviews, with a critic noting "debutant director Salangai Durai may not have made a dream debut but this start is not disappointing."[1]
In early 2009, Durai began work on Kantharvan, a love story narrating the tale of a romance between a lorry driver and a college girl, starring Kathir - who had featured in a small role in Kathavarayan- and Honey Rose.[2] [3] The film had a delayed release in 2014.[4] [5] [6]
In 2019, Durai began work on a police procedural film titled EPCO 302 starring Kasthuri in the lead role, under his own production studio, South Indian Productions. The film eventually had a delayed release, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, in December 2021.[7] [8] Despite a low-profile release, the film garnered critical acclaim.[9] His next release, Kadathal, had a low-profile release in 2023.
Durai worked on a project titled Kandeepan Kanai in the early 2020s, starring newcomers, but the project did not have a theatrical release.[10]
