Saints Borys and Hlib Church (Ukrainian: Церква Святих Мучеників Бориса і Гліба) is a parish of the same name of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Shumliany, Saranchuky rural hromada, Ternopil Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. It is an architectural monument of national importance.[1]
An old oak church is located on top of a hill in the village of Shumliany. Numbers carved into the rafters indicate that the construction lasted from 1696 to 1711. Legends say that there was a monastery near the village at that time. Not far away in the forest there is a "Priest's Well". The stone cross near the church is a tombstone to Mrs. Shumlianska, the mother of Lviv Bishop Yosyf Shumlyansky.[2]
Near the cross in the churchyard is a statue of the Mother of God, built in 1924. Church rituals are performed there, such as: the blessing of water, the blessing on Easter, and the blessing of vegetables on Savior's Day, while young people lead round dances and sing haiivky. There is a custom in the village to light fires near the church at night on Good Friday.
