Rylsky District (ru|Ры́льский райо́н) is an administrative[2] and municipal[3] district (raion), one of the twenty-eight in Kursk Oblast, Russia. It is located in the west of the oblast. The area of the district is 1505.02km2.[1] Its administrative center is the town of Rylsk. Population: 40,714 (2002 Census); The population of Rylsk accounts for 50.5% of the district's total population.
In the environs of Rylsk, two manors are of interest to the student of Russian history. The village of Ivanovskoye, 20km (10miles) east of Rylsk, has a summer residence of Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa, while Maryino, slightly to the west, used to be a seat of the princely house of Baryantinsky, who in 1815-1816 built the Maryino Estate, which includes an extensive English park.[4]
On the occasion of his wedding to the wealthy Princess Catherine of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck, Prince Baryatinsky received 4,000 serfs and villages in the Kursk province:,[5] Snagost and others in the Rylsky District, which Emperor Peter I gave to Hetman Ivan Mazepa before Mazepa sided with Sweden.
