Premer Kahini is a 2008 Indian Bengali-language musical romantic drama film co-written, edited and directed by Ravi Kinnagi. Produced by Shrikant Mohta under the banner of Shree Venkatesh Films, the film is based on Keshav Prasad Mishra's Hindi novel Kohbar Ki Shart. It stars Dev, Koel Mallick and Ranjit Mallick in lead roles, with Jisshu Sengupta in a special appearance. The film celebrates Bengali wedding traditions by means of a story of a married couple and the relationship between their families; a story about sacrificing one's love for one's family.
The film was officially announced in September 2007 in Kolkata, and the principal photography began in November 2007. The film was shot in Kolkata, Jalpaiguri and Purulia, while a song was shot in London. Music of the film was composed by Jeet Gannguli, with lyrics were penned by Priyo Chattopadhyay and Gautam Sushmit, while S. P. Venkatesh provided the background score, along with Gannguli. The screenplay and dialogues of the film were written by N. K. Salil and cinematography was handled by Chota K. Naidu.
Akash is on a visit to Metropolish Fame Mall in Kolkata; amidst a heavy wind, he spots a pretty girl, Barsha. While staring at her, he inadvertently falls into a manhole. Barsha rescues him, but in the process she loses her heart-shaped watch which she had just bought.
While accompanying his mother to her friend's house on the occasion of her daughter's marriage ceremony, Akash confronts a man named Bobby. Bobby, who has been following Barsha, hits Akash, thinking that he is in love with her. Akash, unaware that Bobby has vowed not to allow anyone near Barsha, beats Bobby and his gang up in revenge.
In the house of her mother's friend, Akash unexpectedly meets Barsha. He identifies himself and expresses his love for her and offers to put her lost watch on her. Barsha, who is already engaged, rejects his request. Nonetheless, Akash vows to marry Barsha if she meets him again. In the meantime, Akash discovers that his nearly-deaf host there, Col. Sinha, is Barsha's father and that her wedding is only a week away. Dejected, Akash throws Barsha's watch away. But she calls him and taunts him to return. Delighted, Akash goes in search of her watch and spots a rabbit, which he names Debdas, and brings it along with the watch.
Since Nandini's friends are due to arrive from Siliguri and Mumbai for the wedding, Akash takes Nandini to the railway station. The train is delayed by five hours, so Barsha and Akash decide to visit a nearby hill-temple. While returning from the temple, Akash and Barsha are caught in the rain. An old couple offers to give them shelter inside their hut. Akash, still not sure about expressing his love to Barsha, grabs a couple of toddy bottles, goes out in the rain and starts drinking. However, when Barsha walks towards him, offering an umbrella, he drunkenly tells Barsha that he should stay away from Barsha to remain a decent boy, rather than to propose or elope with her. Barsha is now in love with Akash and is in a dilemma as her wedding is in a few days. She asks him to take her to the top of a waterfall where she expresses her love for him while standing at the edge.
Akash, intent on marrying Nandini, takes Col. Sinha for a morning jog to discuss the matter. But Col. Sinha, a heart patient, tells Akash that he is expected to die anytime and his only desire is to get Barsha married to Gautam: an army officer who saved his life during a war. He also could feel Barsha's mother's worry when she realised that Barsha could be in love with someone else because the wedding was to happen the next day and all invitations were already sent out. Her mother also felt that it would be very unfair to a good person like Gautam. Hence, Akash decides to obey Barsha's parents' wishes and let Gautam marry Barsha. The night before the wedding, an extremely depressed Akash goes to a road-side bar to drink alcohol and sees Gautam arriving for his wedding ceremony. Gautam asks the bar-owner for directions to Col. Sinha's home because of the heavy rains and badly-maintained interior roads. All on a sudden, Bobby arrives there and tries to kill Gautam, Akash saves him and convinces Bobby that Gautam is the best person to marry Barsha.
The next day, Akash brings Gautam to the wedding after Gautam's car broke down. They reach just in time for the ceremony, but Akash declines to attend. Gautam asks for the heart-shaped watch as a memento but Akash leaves, unwilling to part with it. They search for Akash, but cannot find him. Only Akash's mother knows the truth of his love for Barsha, and she tries to hide her fear.
Akash vow to sacrifice their love for Barsha and Gautam. Moments before the wedding, Barsha asks Debdas to give Akash the watch, along with a letter. Debdas exits Barsha's room and instead of taking the letter to Akash, delivers it to Col. Sinha. He reads the letter loudly and Gautam listens it properly. He realises that Akash and Barsha love each other. Subsequently, he confronts both Akash and Barsha. In the end, Akash and Barsha marry each other with the consent of their families.
The music of Premer Kahini is composed by Jeet Gannguli and the lyrics are written by Priyo Chattopadhyay and Gautam Sushmit. The soundtrack was released in India on 15 August 2008. Media partner of Premer Kahini is Bengali Music Channel Sangeet Bangla. The soundtrack 'Tumi Chara' is a Bengali version of the song 'Quit Playing Games With My Heart' by American boy band Backstreet Boys.

The Telegraph wrote that "Just as you had desperately wanted Raj to end up with Simran in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, you almost will best man Akash on to win Barsha's hand in Premer Kahini. Though it has several flashes of the Shah Rukh-Kajol-starrer, director Ravi Kinnagi adds novelty to the script and makes Premer Kahini an engaging watch".[1]
