It is endemic to the Lake Chapala and nearby sections of associated rivers in Jalisco of west-central Mexico.[1] This is a relatively large omnivorous species of Algansea at up to long.[1] Although considered threatened,[1] it can be locally numerous.[2] It is generally not considered a food fish.[2]
