Known For:Pioneering contributions in MRI technology

Peter Boesiger, (Peter Bösiger; born on October 3, 1946) is a Swiss physicist and biomedical engineer known for his contributions to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).[1] [2]

Career

In 1979, Boesiger joined the Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich. He undertook research fellowships at Emory University, Philips Medical Systems, and Philips Research Laboratories. By 1991, he had become a professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich. In 2001, he became the director of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering at both institutions, a position he held until his retirement.[3] [4]

Research and contributions

Boesiger's research has been pivotal in developing new MRI and spectroscopy procedures to assess the functions of the human brain, cardiovascular, and digestive systems. His team has advanced parallel imaging techniques for faster image acquisition and developed methods for accurate flow quantification in moving structures like heart valves and coronaries. His contributions also include cardiac spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging of selected substances in the human brain.
