Parvaneh Etemadi (born 1948;[1]) is an Iranian visual artist. She is a painter,[2] draftsperson, printmaker, and collagist.[3] [4] She is mostly known for her still life drawings on a cement support.[5] Etemadi is a renowned female artist in her country, Iran,[6] but is also known internationally.

Biography

Parvaneh Etemadi was born in 1948 in Tehran, and she was raised in Birjand in South Khorasan province, Iran.[7] [8]

She attended the University of Tehran in the Department of Fine Art, but did not graduate.[9] She was mentored in painting under Bahman Mohasses,[10] and is considered his only direct student.

Her first solo exhibition was in 1969 at in Tehran; and between 1967 and 1977, she regularly showed her work there alongside other artists working in the modernism movement.[11] She has publicly said she does not like to be labeled as a 'woman artist' or as a 'feminist artist', and believes her work resonates more with the, "agony and ecstasy of poetry".[12] In 2019, Tarrahan Azad Gallery in Tehran held a retrospective of her work.

Etemidi sat in front of Bahman Kiarostami's camera for eight months in order to film a documentary about her named, Parvaneh (2020). Her work is in the public museum collection at the British Museum in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.[13]
