Pandey, Pande, or Panday (Hindi: पाण्डेय/पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) (Nepali: पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) is a surname which has its roots in Sanskrit.
India
Majority of Pandey in India are classified under Brahmin varna, mainly residing in various north Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka. Nepal
Pandey surname / family name most commonly found amongst the Chhetri Kshatriyas communities of Nepal; Pande dynasty of Nepal were the Kshatriyas Chhetri aristocratic family who dominated the Nepalese administration and military up until the 19th century as Mulkaji and Mukhtiyar.
Similarly to India, Pandey as a last name is also used by Bhramins of the Madhesi community.
