Our Flag Means Death is an American period romantic comedy[1] [2] television series created by David Jenkins. Set in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy, the series follows the misadventures of gentleman-turned-pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and his crew aboard the Revenge as they try to make a name for themselves as pirates and cross paths with famed pirate captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi).

The first season premiered on March 3, 2022, on HBO Max. In June 2022, the series was renewed for a second season which premiered on October 5, 2023, on Max. In January 2024, the series was canceled after two seasons.

Despite a subdued launch, the series gradually gained word-of-mouth momentum[3] [4] and became a sleeper hit[5] [6] [7] with a cult following.[8] [9] Its surprise success has been compared to Ted Lasso.[10] The series is widely regarded as one of the most beloved LGBTQ+ shows ever made.[11] [12] [13] [14]

Our Flag Means Death garnered critical acclaim, including praise for its LGBTQ+ representation, and was named one of the best series of 2022 and 2023 by most major television critics. The series received numerous accolades, including a Clio Entertainment Award, an Art Directors Guild Award, a Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Award, and the University of California’s Greater Good Science Center Award. The series also earned Peabody Award, Ray Bradbury Nebula Award, Hollywood Critics Association Award, Dorian TV Award, and GLAAD Media Award nominations.

Premise

The series is loosely based on the life of Stede Bonnet, also known as the "Gentleman Pirate".[15] [16] Set in 1717, the first season depicts the early days of Bonnet's career as a pirate after abandoning his family and his comfortable life as a member of the landed gentry of Barbados. Bonnet is portrayed as having little or no aptitude for this role, with no experience beyond that of his privileged life.

Aboard their ship, the Revenge, the newly minted Captain Bonnet and his dysfunctional crew struggle to survive against deadly threats both from naval warships and other bloodthirsty pirates. During their misadventures, the crew of the Revenge cross paths with notorious pirate captain Edward Teach and his crew, including First Mate Izzy Hands. Comedy and chaos ensue as Teach and Bonnet fall in love.

Development

Creator and showrunner David Jenkins was inspired to write the show after learning about Stede Bonnet from his wife and subsequently reading his Wikipedia article. He was particularly interested in filling in the blanks of Bonnet's life, trying to find his motivations for abandoning his family as well as understanding why Blackbeard took him under his wing.[18] [19] From the outset he envisioned the show as centering on a romantic relationship between Bonnet and Blackbeard, and pitched it as such.[20] [21] [22]

Taika Waititi, who shares a manager with Jenkins, became involved after Jenkins told him the story of Stede Bonnet and asked if he wanted to be involved.[23] Waititi was attracted to the project because of what he believed to be Jenkins' original approach to pirates.[24] In subsequent discussions, they agreed that a romance between Bonnet and Teach was "the reason to do the show". Garrett Basch later joined the project as executive producer after reading the script for the pilot episode.[25]

The show was given a straight to series order by HBO Max in September 2020 with Jenkins, Basch and Halstead as executive producers, and Waititi as both an executive producer and director of the first episode.[26] On June 1, 2022, the series was renewed for a second season.[27] The second season's budget was reduced by 40% due to companywide cutbacks at Warner Bros. Discovery.[28]

Casting

Casting an actor to play Stede Bonnet began shortly after the series was ordered. While Rhys Darby's name was mentioned early in the process, it was not until after an unsuccessful round of auditions and most of the script had been written that he was again brought into consideration.[29] His casting was officially announced in January 2021.[30] Jenkins stated that Darby made an otherwise unlikable Stede Bonnet likeable, telling SlashFilm that he was "the only person who could play it". Darby, whose career has consisted primarily of supporting comedic roles, saw the role as an opportunity to branch out and play a leading, and more dramatic role, telling Deadline "I looked at myself and how much experience I've had over the years and I felt maybe it is time to step up."

Taika Waititi, who was already attached as executive producer and director, joined the cast to play Blackbeard four months later in April 2021.[31] Jenkins had begun writing the role with Waititi in mind, and eventually approached him over text asking if he would be interested in playing Blackbeard.[32] In the official casting announcement Jenkins said of Waititi "Our Blackbeard is a legend, a lover, a fighter, a tactical genius, a poetic soul and quite possibly insane. Only one man could play this role, and that is the great Taika Waititi. We're thrilled beyond measure he's decided to don the beard."

In June, it was announced that Kristian Nairn, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Rory Kinnear, Con O'Neill and Vico Ortiz had been added to the cast,[33] with the additions of Ewen Bremner, David Fane, Joel Fry, Guz Khan and Matthew Maher announced in July.[34] In August, it was announced that Leslie Jones, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen and Samba Schutte were cast in recurring roles.[35] [36]

Filming

Filming took place between June 14 and September 28, 2021.[37] Taika Waititi, who serves as an executive producer, also directed the pilot episode, which was filmed after Waititi completed production on . The scenes aboard the Revenge were filmed on a soundstage using StageCraft.[38]

The second season began filming on September 25, 2022, in New Zealand.[39] As filming was underway, Tourism New Zealand partnered with Max to feature the series in a tourism campaign.[40] Filming wrapped on December 13, 2022.[41] [42]

Music

The original score for the series was composed by Mark Mothersbaugh. On May 5, 2022, it was announced that the soundtrack album for the first season would be released by WaterTower Music on May 6, 2022.[43] The soundtrack for the second season released on October 26, 2023.[44]

Cancellation

On January 9, 2024, series creator David Jenkins announced that Max had canceled the series after two seasons.[45] Jenkins stated he had originally planned for three seasons[46] and referred to the cancellation as a "premature end".[47] According to some reports, the third season was set to begin pre-production before news of the seemingly sudden cancellation broke.[48] [49] [50] Jason Mantzoukas revealed he was actively pursuing a role in the third season prior to the cancellation.[51]

The high-profile cancellation of Our Flag Means Death, along with a general decline in scripted content across the streaming industry, marked the end of the Peak TV era.[52] [53] The cancellation was attributed to the "Cancel Your Gays" trend[54] [55] [56] [57] [58] and quickly became one of the most controversial cancellations in television history.[59] Fans responded on social media with many believing the decision to cancel the series was due to homophobia.[60] Critics were surprised by the cancellation given the show's success[61] [62] [63] [64] [65] and voiced their disappointment with the decision.[66] [67] [68] [69] [70] [71] [72] [73] [74] [75] [76] [77] [78] Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter stated "I am really still confused by [the cancellation of] Our Flag Means Death, because that is a show that for a long time was in the Top 10 on Max."[79]

A fan-funded campaign dubbed "Renew as a Crew" was launched and raised enough funds to rent both a billboard in Times Square and a plane flying over Hollywood with the message "Save Our Flag Means Death".[80] Fan efforts also included a Change.org petition which gained over 58,000 signatures within a week of the cancellation[81] and over 85,000 signatures as of March 2024.[82] A campaign to boycott Max and move the series to a different streamer continued under the banner of "Adopt Our Crew".[83] Despite many meetings with streamers, on March 7, 2024, Jenkins announced that the show was unable to find a new home and thanked fans for their support.[84] Jenkins went on to explain that the cancellation "had more to do with an industry trying to figure out how to transition to a new era (and in some instances keep the lights on)."[85]

In April 2024, cast member Samba Schutte appeared on the podcast You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes and revealed the third season of the series "didn't get picked up by Max...because no money, they don't have money."[86] An official Our Flag Means Death podcast was in development at Max with Schutte set to host, but was also canceled due to Warner Bros. Discovery's ongoing financial struggles.[87]

In June 2024, on the Talking Strange podcast with Aaron Sagers, series star Rhys Darby expressed his disappointment with the cancellation and confirmed there was "a financial element" involved in the decision.[88]

In August 2024, Jenkins clarified the series "had the #'s" for renewal and was not canceled due to viewership.[89]

In September 2024, Jenkins expressed interest in Netflix acquiring the series.[90] Jenkins stated if the series were to continue with its planned final season, it "would be an absolute banger."[91] This reignited the fan campaign with a new mission of moving the show to Netflix.[92] [93]

In October 2024, Jenkins stated he has not ruled out a return to the show.[94]

Release

Our Flag Means Deaths first season premiered on HBO Max on March 3, 2022, and released 2–3 weekly episodes through March 24, 2022.[95] [96] [97] The season finale, which consisted of episodes 9 and 10, received an advance screening for members of the Television Academy on March 22, 2022.[98]

In August 2023, a Vanity Fair first look exclusive revealed the second season would premiere on Max in October 2023. The second season premiered with 3 episodes on October 5, 2023, followed by the release of 2 weekly episodes through October 19, 2023. The season finale was released as a single episode that aired on October 26, 2023.[99] Episodes 6 and 7 of the second season were given an advance screening at the NewFest Film Festival on October 16, 2023.[100] The world premiere featured a live panel hosted by Max.[101]

The BBC acquired the series in December 2022 and announced plans to air it in the United Kingdom in early 2023.[102] Our Flag Means Death aired on BBC Two on January 4, 2023, at 10 pm, with one episode airing each week.[103] After the first episode aired, every episode became available to watch or download via the BBC's iPlayer.[104] The second season began airing on February 5, 2024, again on BBC Two in a 10 pm weekday timeslot. Once again, all episodes from the second season became available immediately afterwards on its iPlayer streaming service.[105]

Reception

Critical response

Season 1

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 94% for the first season based on 46 critic reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Our Flag Means Deaths gentle sensibility doesn't quite strike comedic gold, but its bemusing band of buccaneers are endearing enough that viewers seeking a comforting watch will find bountiful booty."[186] Metacritic gave the first season a weighted average score of 70 out of 100 based on 13 critic reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[187] The series was named one of the best shows of 2022 based on Metacritic's year-end compilation of major television critics' top 10 lists.[108]

In a review for IndieWire, Ben Travers referred to the series as "a sweet, splendid farce," with Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi being "pure joy" to watch.[188] Caroline Framke's Variety review praised the story's "surprising introspection" along with Darby and Waititi's "charged chemistry".[189] Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter called the series "an endearing comedy" with "a surprising amount of heart".[190] Writing for Forbes, Paul Tassi described the central love story as "one of the most compelling gay romances I've seen really in any TV show, a funny, sad, heartwrenching romance."[191] Angela Tricarico of Business Insider wrote ""Our Flag Means Death" is an exciting and surprising comedy that makes an excellent case for subscribing to HBO Max."[192] Glen Weldon expressed his love for the series in his review for NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, stating "I love the show. I want to marry the show. I want to live inside the show."[193]

The series was praised for its substantial LGBTQ+ representation, which consists of four queer relationships, one of which involves a nonbinary character (Jim Jimenez).[194] [195] [196] [197] [198] The central romance of the show, between Bonnet and Teach, was originally believed by many to be a "friendship".[199] Critics praised the series for subverting the common queerbaiting trope by making Bonnet and Teach's relationship explicit before the end of the season.[200] [201] [202]

Critics also commended the series for centering the experiences of people of color.[203] [204] According to Jenkins, he and his diverse writers room aimed to portray the historical realities of people of color at the time without subjecting characters and viewers to "trauma porn", stating "we wanted a show where these characters can exist in a fantasy world and their race ... doesn't automatically lead to a traumatic storyline for them".[25] [205] [206]

Season 2

The second season was met with critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 96% based on 37 critic reviews, with an average rating of 8.2/10.[207] The second season was one of the highest reviewed series of 2023 and ranked among Rotten Tomatoes' best TV shows of the year. Metacritic gave the second season a weighted average score of 75 out of 100 based on 16 critic reviews.[208]

TV Guide hailed the second season as "a triumph", calling it "sentimental yet satirical, with thoughtful hidden depths: a rare and welcome combination."[209] Yahoo! News echoed this sentiment, describing the show's "triumphant return" as "funnier, juicier and more romantic than its first season."[210] Paste awarded the second season a 9.7/10 based on its "emotional, romantic, and comedic depth".[211] Writing for The Playlist, Brian Tallerico gave the season an A-, noting "it's a funnier season than the first, with some great guest appearances and an intelligent level of growth in the ensemble".[212] IGN also praised the ensemble cast along with Darby and Waititi's performances, writing "Darby and Waititi remain the charming fulcrums around which their very funny ensemble rotate."[213] RogerEbert.com described the second season as "irreverent and charming" as well as more "confident", writing "the second season of Our Flag Means Death delivers another dose of the offbeat humor that made the first season such a breakout hit while doubling down on the romance that made fans fall in love with it."[214] The Daily Beast declared the show's sophomore outing to be "the funniest show on TV",[215] while TV Insider dubbed the second season "TV’s best feel-good comedy of 2023".[216]

In addition to being funnier and more romantic than the first season, critics also noted the second season's darker tone. Collider gave the "distinctly darker" season an A-, praising its "balance between lighter and darker elements, which all contribute to a perfect tenor that sings throughout every episode."[217] The Daily Beast applauded the second season's "incredible" ability to "balance its quirkiness, its romance, and its darker themes ... while never feeling either too frivolous or too heavy-handed."[218] Mashable cautioned "fans who enjoyed the buoyancy of Season 1 might be thrown by the occasionally grim intensity of Season 2," but went on to say "amid heart-to-hearts about trauma and change, Jenkins and his crew make room for queer joy."[219] SlashFilm wrote "its comedy, emotional core, and thrilling sense of peril all balance on a knife's edge," adding "even in its darkest moments, the show's writing is brilliantly snappy and deeply quirky."[220] John Anderson of The Wall Street Journal compared the romcom's "casual carnage" to a hypothetical John Hughes and Quentin Tarantino collaboration, "but not as funny."[221]

Viewership

The first season debuted to popular acclaim and ranks among the top five most watched HBO Max comedy series launches.[222] Although audiences were initially slow to discover the series, viewership steadily increased as word-of-mouth spread. Audience demand more than tripled during the three weeks between the series premiere and the season 1 finale.[223] During this time, its popularity surpassed every HBO and Max Original series.[224] [225] [226] Our Flag Means Death became the biggest new series in the U.S. and the 11th most in-demand show in the world following the release of season 1 episodes 9 and 10.[227] The series unseated The Book of Boba Fett, which had previously claimed the top spot for three months.[228] It remained the most in-demand breakout series across all streaming platforms for seven consecutive weeks before being surpassed by the premiere of .[229] A week later, Our Flag Means Death regained the top spot and held it for another two weeks.[230] By the end of 2022, Our Flag Means Death was the 5th most in-demand series on HBO Max[231] and the 2nd most in-demand series among young adult viewers across all platforms.[232]

While the first season was a slow-burn hit, the second season debuted to much higher demand.[233] The second season averaged nearly 45 times the average series demand in its first 10 days, outperforming audience demand for the third seasons of The Righteous Gemstones and Succession.[234] It peaked at nearly 60 times the average series demand by mid-October, suggesting that viewership continued to grow as the season aired.[235] According to Max's public ranking system, Our Flag Means Death became the streaming service's top series during its second season run.[236] The new season spent 6 weeks in Max's Top 10.[237] The instant success of the second season elevated the series to flagship status at Max,[234] resulting in a new line of official merchandise sold through the HBO Shop.[238] In a November 2023 interview with TV Insider, series star Rhys Darby commented on the second season's viewership: "not that anyone gives out numbers, but I heard on the ethos that people [are] watching it, and it's rating really high."[239] Our Flag Means Death was the most popular Max Original series and the 3rd most popular Max series of 2023, ranking behind The Last of Us and Succession.[240]
