Orion-class submarine explained

The Orion-class submarines were a class of two submarines built for the French Navy between 1928 and 1931.

Design

The Orion-class submarines were ordered in 1928 to a Loire-Simonot design. 67m (220feet) long, with a beam of 6.2m (20.3feet) and a draught of 4.4m (14.4feet), they could dive up to 80m (260feet). The submarines had a surfaced displacement of 5580NaN0 and a submerged displacement of 7870NaN0. Propulsion while surfaced was provided by two diesel engines with a total of 1400hp and two electric motors with a total of 1000hp. The submarines' electrical propulsion allowed it to attain speeds of while submerged and on the surface. Their surfaced range was 4000nmi at 10kn with a submerged range of 82nmi at 5kn.[1] [2] [3]
