Orangi District (formerly Karachi West District),, (Urdu: {{Nastaliq|ضلع اورنگی) is an administrative, one of 7th district of Karachi Division in Sindh, Pakistan.

History

The District was abolished in 2000 and divided into five towns namely:

On 11 July 2011, the Sindh Government reinstated the Karachi West District.[5]

In 2020, Kemari District was carved out from Karachi West District. This resulted in Kemari Town, SITE Town and Baldia Town becoming being part of Kemari District. Lyari became part of Karachi South district in 2015.[6] [7] [8]

As of 2023, Sindh Government renamed Karachi West District to its famous town name Orangi District.[9]

Demographics

In the 2023 census, the district had a population of 2,679,380[10]

The majority religion is Islam, with 97.78% of the population. Christianity is practiced by 1.87% of the population.[11]

At the time of the 2023 census, 55.4% of the population spoke Urdu, 24.38% Pashto, 4.87% Punjabi, 3.88% Sindhi, 3.45% Saraiki, 2.74% Balochi, and 2.39% Hindko as their first language.[12]
