Nausauket, Rhode Island Explained

Nausauket, Rhode Island is a coastal neighborhood located in Warwick, Rhode Island in the United States. Nausauket is bounded to the South by Greenwich Bay, to the West by the bay and Apponaug Cove. Nausauket is delimited by Buttonwoods to the East and Rhode Island Route 117 to the North.

The name "Nausauket" means "at the second outlet", or "between outlets" in the Narragansett language of the Narragansett people.[1]

History

Nausauket was a former American Indian village.[2] By the 1800s it had been developed into farmland. Taylor Farm, owned by Ambrose Taylor, was located there.[3] A post card from 1911 shows "Camping at Taylor Farm, Cowesett Bay".[4] Beginning in the mid 1910's, the land was turned into lots and developed. Many beach cottages were built during that time.[5] A map of Nausauket from 1922, from the Sanborn Fire Insurance shows some of the early street names.[6]

Schools and colleges

The neighborhood has one public school within its borders. The E.G. Robertson School, formerly known as Nausauket School, was built in 1947.[7] It was the City of Warwick's first post-World War II modern school and was featured in the January, 1947 issue of The Nation's Schools magazine.[8]
