SERNANP was created on 13 May 2008, replacing the former National Institute of Natural Resources - INRENA, founded on 27 November 1992 as an agency under the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation.[3] Additionally, it ensures the conservation of Protected Natural Areas, their biological diversity, and the maintenance of their ecosystem services, within the framework of its participatory management and in line with a comprehensive policy of sustainable development for the country.
