NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine explained

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced a new command called NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) at the NATO summit in Washington (July 9-11, 2024).[1] It will coordinate arms deliveries to Ukraine and the training of Ukrainian soldiers from Germany (Wiesbaden). Until then, the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U), which has around 300 soldiers, was tasked with that. The USA set up and led the SAG-U at the end of 2022 at the European headquarters of the US armed forces in Wiesbaden.

Russian armed forces have been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine in violation of international law since February 24, 2022.

The NSATU will have around 700 employees, of which Germany will provide 42[2], including the deputy commander, a two-star general. 31 NATO members are involved (all except Hungary).

The NSATU began its activities on July 12, 2024. The 31 NATO allies have pledged a minimum amount of 40 billion euros per year, divided among the allies according to their share of NATO's total gross domestic product (GDP).

The Supreme Commander for Europe will need a few more months to set up the NSATU command so that it can take on all planned tasks, NATO representatives said on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington. Until then, the US armed forces would take over the coordination tasks.

The Government of Hesse (Second Rhein cabinet) welcomed the new command. It is considered likely that it will be based at Wiesbaden-Erbenheim Air Base.[6] The headquarters of the US Army Europe (USAREUR) is also located there.
