The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (Spanish; Castilian: Ministerio de Desarrollo Agrario y Riego, MIDAGRI) is the government ministry in charge of the agricultural sector., the minister is Andrés Alencastre.

Overview

It was created by Law 9711 on January 2, 1943 by the government of president Manuel Prado Ugarteche. Its main function is the overseeing and regulation of the agrarian sector of the country.

Organization

The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation is a well-organized institution that consists of several key departments and bodies. At the top, there is the Minister of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, who is responsible for overseeing all the activities of the Ministry. The Viceminister of Agriculture assists the Minister in executing the Ministry's policies and programs.

Other important departments include the Secretary General, who manages the administrative affairs of the Ministry, the Agrarian Advisory Council, which provides expert advice on agriculture-related matters, and the Internal Auditing Office, which ensures that the Ministry's operations are carried out efficiently and effectively.

The Public Attorney provides legal support to the Ministry, while the General Office of Agrarian Planning and General Office of Legal Assistance handle planning and legal matters respectively. The General Administration Office deals with the overall management of the Ministry, while the General Directorate of Agricultural Information and General Directorate of Agricultural Promotion focus on the dissemination of information and promotion of agriculture-related activities.

The Ministry also has Regional Agricultural Governing Bodies that oversee agricultural activities in specific regions, and Agricultural Agencies that carry out day-to-day activities related to agriculture. Overall, this well-organized structure allows the Ministry to effectively carry out its mandate of promoting sustainable agricultural development and irrigation in the country.

Objectives

1. Fortify agriculturally producing organizations and to promote their integration under the focus of managing watersheds and production chains.

2. Encouraging technological innovations and training directed towards agricultural producers by providing technical assistance.

3. Establishing a system of agricultural information allowing producers to have an efficient decision-making process for their business.

4. Facilitate agricultural producers with access to legal, administrative, management, financial, technical, sanitary, and other assistance permitting the producer to better their enterprise.

5. To facilitate the articulation of smallholder agriculture to a market economy, by establishing policies for the proper use of natural resources.
