Mianpur is a village with a Municipal Council, located near Anandpur Sahib in the Rupnagar District of Punjab, India.[1]
Mianpur was founded as a Jagirdari by Sardar Gurdit Singh of Mianpur in the mid 1700s; after the Raja of Sialba gave some land to Gurdit Singh.[2] [3] Gurdit Singh was the grandson of Lala Jaswant Rai, a Khatri Hindu, who founded the villages of Fatehabad and Verowal on the Beas.[4] [5] After Gurdit Singh of Mianpur's death in 1791 the title of Sardar of Mianpur went down to Sardar Dal Singh of Mianpur. His son Sardar Diwan Singh of Mianpur had personally fought in the Battle of Ferozeshah on the side of the British and again fought in the Revolt of 1857 for which the family was rewarded with permanent benefits in the form of withdrawal of commutation taxes.
After Sardar Diwan Singh of Mianpur's death the title went to Sardar Partab Singh of Mianpur (born in 1846).[6] He received the title of Sardar Bahadur on June 22, 1897 and later became an honorary magistrate of Mianpur,[7] he was invited for the Coronation on 1st January 1903 to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Edward VII.[8] Under his rule the village transformed into an agricultural town, he allowed many peasants to settle and take some of his land for cultivation efforts.
His son was Shamsher Singh of Mianpur, who entered service of the Punjab Police as a Sub-Inspector in 1890, made Inspector in 1906 and Deputy Superintendent of Police afterwards.[9] His services were lent to the Jodhpur State and became Inspector-General of Police there for four years, where he became famous for reorganizing the Jodhpur State Police.[10] After his return he helped developed the village by planting cotton farms in the area.
Mianpur village is located in the Rupnagar tehsil of Rupnagar District in Punjab, India.[11] It is situated 9 kms away from Rupnagar, which is both district and sub-district headquarter of the Mianpur village.[12] As per 2009 statistics, Mianpur village is also a Gram Panchayat.[13]
Mianpur has a total population of 2,160 people, out of which male population is 1,194 while female population is 966. Literacy rate of Mianpur village is 75.65% out of which 80.49% males and 69.67% females are literate. There are about 433 houses in Mianpur village. It is a Sikh-majority village and contains a Khalsa School.
